Tin packaging in the spotlight: Innovation, sustainability and creative solutions.

22-06-2023

With changing consumer demands, political directives and improved technologies, the packaging world is in non-stop flux. Tin packaging plays a major role in this respect. What does the future actually look like for these metal containers? Which tin packaging is currently a favourable choice? After all, there are so many. Anyone who has taken a look at our website can attest to that.

At the helm of The Box tins is Tony Veer. He has been active in this field since 1995 and has witnessed many changes, trends and developments in the world of tin can packaging. What is his outlook on the future?

Tin cans: raw materials and production

'If there is any packaging that uses resources sparingly, it is tin. It can be infinitely recycled in an efficient way, without compromising on value. Among the raw materials needed for tin production are iron ore and (processed) coal. By recycling scrap material, substantial savings can be made on both raw materials and energy. Through sustainable production, sustainable use (tins last for years) and then recycling, metal packaging very much belongs in the circular economy.'

Reusable packaging

'So, on sustainability, tin can packaging scores incredibly well. Also because they help reduce the use of other types of packaging, such as disposable plastic. You might be familiar with supermarkets or specialty shops that let customers bring their own packaging, to be filled in-store. Think of the reusable bags for fruit and vegetables at the supermarket. Or tea herbs to be tapped in your own tin.'

'Tin packaging can play a marvellous role in the emerging package-free shop!'

Tin packaging is accessible

'The future holds great promise in terms of accessibility as well. Matters that were only reserved for the 'big players' until about 10 years ago have become more accessible today. Even the local baker can order customised tins these days. With more and more favourable product options, it is now also possible to order customised products in smaller runs. With us, you can order customised tins starting from 2,000 pieces.'

From 'costly' to 'cost-effective'

'A tin can is not the cheapest in terms of purchase. It is, after all, one of the fancier packaging options. However, we do see more and more people realising that it is a more cost-effective choice in the long run, due to the sustainability of the packaging. The reputation of tins has gone from "costly" to "cost-effective".'

Unique artwork

'When it comes to designer tins, we see that the quality of the artwork is improving. After all, technologies are always evolving. Embossing is particularly popular. It's affordable and you get a great deal in return: a unique designer packaging with chic printing. An eye-catcher on the shelf, a delightful surprise to receive.'

'All things considered, in my view, the future looks very bright. Especially considering the fact that politicians and consumers are increasingly committed to sustainability. Tin packaging fits perfectly into that picture. And since our tins are also a marketing tool, it creates an ironclad combination!'
